Christopher Lawford, the son of President Kennedy's sister Pat, is an actor who's appeared on soaps such as All My Children and General Hospital. He also authored a book, Symptoms of Withdrawal: A Memoir of Snapshots and Redemption, that detailed his recovery from the addictions that likely led to his infection with hepatitis C. Treatment with pegylated interferon and ribavirin reportedly worked to treat his hep C infection. That's a treatment strategy that has worked for many people infected with hepatitis C, said Dr. Jacobson. He noted that people battling both addiction and hep C can be successful with the right treatment.
Singer Natalie Cole
Singer Natalie Cole learned she had hepatitis C after the hep C virus had likely been in her system for decades, from heroin use in her youth. In her memoir Love Brought Me Back, Cole detailed finding out about her hepatitis C infection after routine blood tests led her to kidney and liver specialists. Her situation isn’t unusual, said Jacobson. “Liver inflammation and scarring are insidious and silent and leave the affected person unaware that there is a problem going on,” he explained. Hepatitis C infection symptoms are often mild and vague, including fatigue and joint pain.
