In an interview with British Cosmopolitan, Gwyneth Paltrow chatted about run-of-the-mill topics like her fitness regimen and favorite cheat foods. And then she let rip on sun exposure with this gem:
"We're human beings and the sun is the sun – how can it be bad for you? I think we should all get sun and fresh air. I don't think anything that is natural can be bad for you – it's really good to have at least 15 minutes of sun a day."
Now, the founder of Goop isn't totally off-base telling people to get some sun, which is the best way to get vitamin D, a nutrient that promotes calcium and phosphate absorption in the gut, and is essential for bone health.
However, Paltrow is also making the dangerous claim that anything natural is automatically good for you. Whoa. Let's not forget about tobacco, snake venom, poison ivy, cocaine and – ahem – natural disasters. Not to mention that unsafe sun exposure can be a problem for people who have a family history of skin cancer or other risk factors.
