Alcoholism is a state in which a person is unable to control himself from consuming excessive alcohol frequently. Men are usually more addict to alcohol than women.
Addiction to alcohol is due to changes in the levels of chemicals in the brain. The chemicals which make the person crave for alcohol are dopamine and gamma amino butyric acid.
Variation in the levels of these chemical create the craving to make the person feel better.
Causes of Alcoholism
Alcoholism begins with occasional drinking habit which gradually makes the person an addict to it. Usually people take up alcohol drinking as an excuse to escape from responsibilities or stresses of life. Some drink to keep up with social pressure in social gatherings.

Too much alcohol damages the liver and may slowly cause cirrhosis. Disorder of stomach and bowels also may occur as a result of alcoholism. Excessive consumption may also affect heart and the brain cells may get damaged too.
